"February is pitiless, and it's boring. That parade of red numerals on its page adds up to zero: birthdays of politicians, a holiday reserved for rodents, what kind of celebrations are those? The only bubble in the flat champagne of February is Valentine's Day. It was no accident that our ancestors pinned Valentine's day on February's shirt: he or she lucky enough to have a lover in frigid, antsy February has cause for celebration, indeed."
"My first thought when thinking of a Valentine's Day menu was Tom Robbins' quote in which he suggests that Valentine's day is the only tiny bubble of excitement in an otherwise boring month. Well, that made sense to me. Maybe Valentine's day didn't have to be red roses and heart shaped chocolates, it could be about spice and excitement and the discovery of something new. When I turned that sentiment towards food, my very first thoughts were the spices and flavors of Middle Eastern cuisine. Harissa, sumac, za'atar, lemon, and mint. Robust flavors that bring a surprising depth to otherwise ordinary dishes and always make me think of warmth. So this Valentine's day is about spicing things up. Warming ourselves from the inside out and taking a tiny culinary trip to somewhere exotic and new."
